Dogs with IVDD — More Than Just a Wheelchair

Over recent months, I’ve been seeing a growing number of dogs diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). It’s affecting many breeds, but the most common I’m seeing right now are French Bulldogs and Miniature Dachshunds—with some Frenchies being remarkably young. One little Frenchie I met was diagnosed at just one year old.
When people contact me after an IVDD diagnosis, it’s often because they’re looking for a wheelchair for their dog. I’m always happy to help with that, as mobility aids can make a huge difference in maintaining independence and quality of life.
But a wheelchair is just one tool in your dog’s recovery and long-term management.

A multi-modal approach matters
IVDD is not a one-size-fits-all condition, and neither is its treatment. A multi-modal approach—one that combines several complementary therapies—gives your dog the best chance at maintaining strength, comfort, and mobility.
Some of the therapies and supportive tools that can be helpful include:
- Rehabilitation and physiotherapy – Tailored exercises to help maintain or regain strength, flexibility, and coordination.
- Hydrotherapy – Gentle, low-impact movement in water helps support joints while building muscle safely.
- Laser therapy – Can help reduce inflammation and support tissue healing.
- Shock Wave Therapy – Uses acoustic energy to stimulate blood flow and healing in damaged tissues, often used to reduce pain and promote recovery in spinal and muscular injuries.
- Accell Therapy – A form of passive physiotherapy that uses whole-body vibration to increase circulation, improve muscle tone, and support healing (learn more about Accell Therapy here).
- Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) – A newer option now available in parts of NSW, this therapy delivers oxygen at high pressure to enhance tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and support neurological recovery.
- Acupuncture and massage – Beneficial for pain relief, relaxation, and overall well-being.
- Supportive equipment – Including harnesses, drag bags, and protective wear for comfort and safety.
- WiggleLess® Back Brace – Designed to provide gentle spinal support and limit excessive movement, helping dogs with IVDD feel more stable and confident while reducing the risk of further injury.
Every dog’s recovery journey is unique, and the right combination of therapies and equipment depends on their specific condition, age, and personality.

Where a wheelchair fits in
A Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair can be an important part of your dog’s rehab plan. It allows them to move safely and comfortably while supporting their spine and preventing muscle loss. Many dogs use their cart temporarily during recovery, while others benefit from it long-term to stay active and happy.
The goal is always the same: to help your dog move, heal, and live well.

A growing field of care
Animal rehabilitation is an emerging and rapidly growing industry in Australia. As awareness increases, more options are becoming available to support pets through injury, surgery, and chronic conditions like IVDD.
However, it’s important to seek guidance from qualified and experienced animal rehabilitation therapists before embarking on home-based exercises or treatments. Every dog’s spine and neurological condition is different, and improper techniques can do more harm than good.
When you work with a knowledgeable rehabilitation professional, you can be confident your dog is receiving care that’s safe, targeted, and effective—helping them achieve the best possible outcome.
